I am a freelance illustrator and I have been in the biz for over 10 years as a working professional. I have several portfolios to show you because I have done quite a bit of work spanning news papers, magazines, roleplaying games, and children's literature. Each piece I create is carefully researched, I think that's why my work communicates well to its audience. My background as a graphic designer also helps me tell the story with pictures clearly, it also helps that I am a big fan of cinema as well as literature.
I have had the pleasure of illustrating some very fine projects and publications. You may find some of them at your local book store or hobby shop, but you may also order them direct from the publishers. At the end of my introduction to you, I will share with you a short list of some titles you would likely be able to find with relative ease.
So what can I tell you about my development as an artist? I grew up in the lovely woodlands of western Pennsylvania. I think I figured out I was meant to be an artist somewhere around the age of six. In those early days my older brother shared most of his drawing knowledge with me and the rest I figured out by studying everything I saw and the works of my favorite artists. I adored the work of Alphonse Mucha, Mary Cecily Barker, Sir Frank Dicksee, Larry Elmore, Brian Froud, J.W. Waterhouse, Gustav Klimt, Frank Frazetta, and Carravaggio. I started playing Dungeons & Dragons in 1986, though I haven't played in some time now I have never forgotten how it encouraged me to dream. You could say that I got my first gig as an artist at age 16 drawing and painting portraits in pastel and watercolor. Also at that same time I was involved with a highschool outreach program to younger students, it didn't take long for me to find just how many young children were abused in my own small town and to see the devastating effects. I don't think I will ever forget those kids as long as I live and I certainly think that you can see it in my work to this day.
After high school, I attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, graduating with honors in 1996. While I was in school I learned how to draw caricatures from a pupil of the legendary John Johns. After the Art Institute I began working as an illustrator and graphic designer. Some of the companys I have had the opportunity to work with are the Mongoose Publishing, Dorrance Publishing, the Heartwood Institute, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, The Cultural Trust, Black Box, Aquent Partners, Sony, Vertis, and UPMC Health Systems.
I am ever looking ahead and adding new publishers and commissions to my repertoire.
